Examining Cosmetic Surgery: 4 Considerations Before You Go Under the Knife

The obsession with beauty deep, deep enough that people are willing to risk pain and possible disfigurement in search of the perfect face and body. They’re nipping and tucking – at eyelids, noses, breasts, faces, thighs, hips, and any other part of their body that they think is ungainly. And it’s not just the women who are making a beeline to the doctor’s office; the macho (and now metrosexual) male sex is also seeking hair transplants, liposuction, and other cosmetic treatments that were earlier reserved only for women.

The statistics are there to prove it – the American Society of Plastic Surgeons recorded a 7 percent increase in the number of cosmetic surgeries between 2007 and 2008. What was introduced as a practice to correct deformities has now turned into a run-of-the-mill procedure to pander to women and men who rely on their physical appearance to boost their confidence and self-esteem. Remember Rachel’s obsession with her newborn daughter’s nose in the television program “Friends”? People with their priorities straight are concerned with their children growing up to become talented and savvy individuals; it’s only those who are obsessed with beauty who worry about passing on their less-that-desirable physical features to their kids!

I don’t mean to sound judgmental, but look what happened to Michael Jackson! I mean, the man has no face anymore. It’s like a giant flesh-eating bug is devouring him slowly, relishing every small particle in his face, inch by excruciating inch. In his obsession for white skin, the once-famous and now infamous singer has no skin at all. And Botox – this supposed wonder drug makes you look more porcelain than flesh-and-blood. Liposuction and tummy tucks are permanent only if you can stick to a sensible diet and a regular exercise routine post surgery; otherwise you go back to your fat former self.

But it all boils down to a matter of your personal choice; if you prefer an elastic smile over one that radiates from your eyes, if you like perky and bouncy breasts that attract more stares and comments than they should, if you think a penis enlargement or implant would make you a Casanova between the sheets, then the least you can do is make sure you get your facts straight and follow the basic precautions before you let yourself be cut open.

  • Seek proper and correct medical advice. Talk about the procedure; discuss the anesthesia that will be used, the pain you may have to go through, and the subsequent recovery period.
  • Think through your decision thoroughly before you put yourself under the surgeon’s knife.
  • Seek the services of reputable and approved surgeons even though they may cost you much more. No amount of money is going to be able to save you from the grotesque effects of a botched surgery.
  • Follow rehabilitation procedures correctly and diligently.

It’s not hard to understand the lure of cosmetic surgery when the whole world is obsessed with beauty, so if you must join the crowd, do so with a little bit of common sense.
